1) Landfill Gas (LFG) Management

Landfill gas emanating from landfills predominately consisting of methane has been a valuable resource for electricity and Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects.

  1. a) Landfill Gas Collection System

A landfill gas collection system is the initial engineering solution required to collect landfill gas into a landfill gas flare or engine. It consisted of several components  and considerations such as the:

-Vertical landfill gas wells

-Horizontal landfill gas pipeline system

-Control valves and manifolds

-Condensate dewatering system with condensate traps

-Leachate pumping system

These components shall require various considerations such as, site topography, gradient for piping and other site conditions. Sunsource has the capabilities to design, build, supply and commission effective landfill gas collection and utilization systems that is able to meet stringent CDM requirements.

  1. b) Landfill Gas Flaring

The simplest way to dispose the LFG collected in an environmental friendly manner is by flaring. LFG flaring involves the destruction of methane gas which is 21 times more hazardous as a global warming agent compared to carbon dioxide. Towards minimizing the global warming impact, Sunsource, based on its many years of experience has developed cost efficient and reliable combustionsystem for LFG flaring able to withstand high temperatures and local conditions.

  1. c) Landfill Gas Power Generation

Generation of electricity from landfill gas is a step further from flaring whereby the heat energy can be utilized to generate power when tapping methane into gas engines. For the electricity generation to work, the delivery of methane into the gas engines will have to be properly regulated and become constant hence, may require biogas storage tanks. Depending on the gas quality, the landfill gas may be required to be treated via removal of sulphur or moisture to enable proper ignition and the reliability of the gas engines. Electricity generation from methane requires careful engineering and advanced technologies to effectively minimize hazards for the good of the environment.

2) Biogas Management

Biogas is biologically generated gas mainly consisting of methane which may originate from anaerobic wastewater ponds, anaerobic biomass digester tanks and others.

  1. a) Biogas Collection System

The collection system for biogas can be different from landfill gas as typically, the gas generating mass may originate from wastewater ponds or biomass tanks. Such collection systems may include a biogas storage tank in order to provide consistent flow of biogas into the prevailing flare or power generation system.

  1. b) Biogas Flaring

A biogas flare blower will be electronically controlled and biogas travelling into the flare system will undergo several measurement apparatus such as flow meters, pressure and temperature sensors. The biogas will typically be released in the enclosed flare stack and be ignited via sparks for destruction of methane. The flaring of methane is a strictly regulated process with additional attached equipment such as gas analyzers, data loggers and PLC controls for continuous automated operations.

  1. c) Biogas Power Generation

Power generation from biogas is much similar to landfill gas whereby constant biogas is supplied into a gas engine towards activating the turbine hence producing renewable electricity.

Biomass waste is essential to create energy for the world. It is very clean-cheap-renewable type of source for energy and fuel that uses trash and waste products in a way that helps the environment. It also helps keep the sources from the earth that is not renewable available for future generations.

Currently, it has been used in many countries where resources are lacking and there are many projects slated to use the energy and fuel of biomass in order to save the non-renewable sources of the earth. Mini Hydro

Hydropower already plays a significant part of the nation’s energy mix, and mini-hydropower from streams and rivers has boosted the electricity supply in rural areas. The basic principle of mini hydropower is that the water had been piped from certain higher level to lower level, which will cause pressure difference. The water pressure difference will be used to move hydraulic turbine movement conversion of the potential energy of water into mechanical energy. After that, the hydro turbines will convert water pressure into mechanical shaft power, which is used to drive an electricity generator. Besides that, it provides an attractive alternative power source for a many communities throughout the world as well as for highly industrialized country. It has minimal construction work and no reservoir for water storage which can help people reduce their energy cost more energy independent and can reduce their carbon footprint.
